R24 Discovery Miles 240 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

David Blair directs this British drama, loosely inspired by John Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice and Men'. Set in Nottingham, the film revolves around the relationship between the thuggish Danny (Stephen Graham) and Joseph (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), a giant of a man with a mental age of seven. When Danny finds himself in debt to a local crime boss, he feels he is left with no choice but to manipulate Joseph into participating in a series of underground cage fights from which Danny can profit. Salvation appears to call out to both men when they begin relationships with Lisa (Emma Stansfield) and Isabel (Maxine Peake), but will they be able to escape the bloody world of gambling and fighting Danny has plunged them into?

Peirce on Realism and Idealism (Paperback): Robert Lane Peirce on Realism and Idealism (Paperback)
Robert Lane
R804 Discovery Miles 8 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a new interpretation of the metaphysics of Charles Peirce (1839-1914), the founder of pragmatism and one of America's greatest philosophers. Robert Lane begins by examining Peirce's basic realism, his belief in a world that is independent of how anyone believes it to be. Lane argues that this realism is the basis for Peirce's account of truth, according to which a true belief is one that would be settled by investigation and that also represents the real world. He then explores Peirce's application of his Pragmatic Maxim to clarify the idea of reality, his two forms of idealism, and his realism about generality and vagueness. This rich study will provide readers with a clear understanding of Peirce's thoughts on reality and truth and how they intersect, and of his views on the relation between the mind and the external world.

Practical Reflections for Every Day Throughout the Year (Paperback): Edward Peach Practical Reflections for Every Day Throughout the Year (Paperback)
Edward Peach; Edited by Brother Hermenegild Tosf; Robert Lane
R605 Discovery Miles 6 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

THE Practical Reflections may be called one of our standard books of pidy. During the space of little more than a century, ten editions have been published; and it is now in more general use, and meets with more universal approbation than at any former period. The concise manner in which the subjects are treated, renders it particularly useful for those who have not time for much reading; and the quantity of matter which is compressed into that small compass, makes it beneficial to those who have time to protract their meditations. The name of the pious author has hitherto been concealed. From the following account, however, sent to the editor by that learned and persevering investigator of Catholic biographical history, &c., the Rev. J. Kirk, of Lichfield, it may be presumed that the author was the Rev. Robert Lane, alias Bowes: "Robert Lane, alias Bowes, educated at Douay, lived at Hatherop, (the seat of the Webb family, near Fairford, Gloucestershire, ) died at Bath, December 17, 1735. He was author, says Mr. Eyre, of Ushaw, in a letter of January 6, 1791, of the Practical Reflections. The late: Mr. John Lee, of Hammersmith, declared to me in the year 1815, and to the Rev. Mr. Hodgson, frequently, that his original MS. was at Hatherop, w hen he lived there. On the other hand, Mr. Darell, of Calehill, being asked by Bishop Poynter, (at my request) May 6th, 1821, whether he knew of any tradition in his family of the Practical Reflections being the work of Father Dorrell, answered, that he knew of none."

The Second Letter (Paperback): Robert Lane The Second Letter (Paperback)
Robert Lane
R402 Discovery Miles 4 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Jake Travis is contracted by his ex-Army colonel to retrieve a missing fifty year-old Cold War letter, he quickly finds himself entwined in a world where the line between good and evil becomes increasingly blurred. The letter, written in 1961 by a CIA operative who met a mysterious demise, has ended up in the possession of Raydel Escobar. As Jake relentlessly pursues the enigmatic Escobar, he soon discovers that Escobar is involved in far more than simply blackmailing the IRS in exchange for the letter. Assisted by his partner Garrett and neighbor Morgan, Jake turns up the heat on Escobar. Fascinated with the letter's origins and the fate of those who first touched the document, Jake will stop at no end--moral or otherwise--to complete his assigned task. Jake's girlfriend questions why he places their relationship, and his life, in jeopardy for something he knows so little about. The Second Letter is a page-turning mystery that blends suspense with literary fiction. Set on the west coast of Florida, its plot twists, richly-drawn characters, and sharp, witty dialogue forge a gripping and entertaining read. Jake discovers that only by risking everything can he define himself, secure his relationship with the woman he loves, and discover the message of the second letter. ..".a standout sleuth...a worthy new entry into the suspense genre." Foreword Clarion Reviews, Five Stars "Lane's crime thriller features a wisecracking Jacob Travis...with a penchant for breaking the rules...certainly worth a read for fans of the genre." Kirkus Reviews "Robert Lane's novel, The Second Letter, is an entertaining read fueled by a riveting story featuring a wisecracking, somewhat reluctant hero...the book moves at an idea pace..." blueink Review
